1To you I do lift up my eyes, you who sit in the heavens. 2Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress; so our eyes look to Yahweh, our God, until he has mercy on us. 3Have mercy on us, Yahweh, have mercy on us, for we have endured much contempt. 4Our soul is exceedingly filled with the scoffing of those who are at ease, with the contempt of the proud.

“"Have mercy upon us, O LORD, have mercy upon us, for we have had more than enough of contempt."”
Psalms 123:3
Summary
Psalms 123 is a brief and poignant prayer for mercy and relief from contempt. This chapter is a part of the Songs of Ascents, which were sung by pilgrims journeying to Jerusalem. The psalmist expresses a deep yearning for God's intervention by lifting his eyes to the Lord, who is enthroned in the heavens, showing a posture of humility and dependence. The image of eyes looking to masters or mistresses signifies a servitude that waits patiently for sustenance and mercy. The plea emphasizes the exhaustion and weariness faced by the community due to scorn and derision from the proud and arrogant. This communal lament offers hope through its reverent appeal to a compassionate God who sees the affliction and can offer divine relief. It invites the faithful to remain humble and patient, trusting in God’s justice and mercy.
