1Oh clap your hands, all you nations. Shout to God with the voice of triumph! 2For Yahweh Most High is awesome. He is a great King over all the earth. 3He subdues nations under us, and peoples under our feet. 4He chooses our inheritance for us, the glory of Jacob whom he loved. Selah. 5God has gone up with a shout, Yahweh with the sound of a trumpet. 6Sing praises to God, sing praises. Sing praises to our King, sing praises. 7For God is the King of all the earth. Sing praises with understanding. 8God reigns over the nations. God sits on his holy throne. 9The princes of the peoples are gathered together, the people of the God of Abraham. For the shields of the earth belong to God. He is greatly exalted!

For God is the King of all the earth; sing praises with a psalm!

Psalms 47:7

Summary

Psalms 47 is a joyful and triumphant hymn that calls all people to recognize the sovereignty of God as the King of all the earth. The psalm begins with an invitation for all nations to clap their hands and shout to God with loud songs of joy. This response of praise is called for because God is depicted as an awe-inspiring King who rules over the entire world. The psalm underscores the victory and majesty of God, highlighting His protection and favor towards His chosen people, Israel. Moreover, it portrays God’s exaltation through His ascension to His heavenly throne. A significant theme of this psalm is the universality of God's reign. It emphasizes that God’s authority and kingship are not limited to Israel but extend over all nations, suggesting a future where all people recognize His dominion. The psalm concludes with a declaration that God reigns over the nations and sits on His holy throne, with the princes of the peoples gathering as the people of the God of Abraham. This points to the inclusion of Gentiles in God’s blessing, a key theological insight anticipating the New Testament revelation of salvation for all through Christ. The theological significance of Psalm 47 lies in its prophetic vision of God's kingship, which transcends national boundaries and prefigures the universal kingdom of Christ. It encourages believers to rejoice in the God who is sovereign and to anticipate the fulfillment of His kingdom on earth as it is in heaven. The call to praise God is both an acknowledgment of His past victories and an act of faith in His ultimate plan for humanity.
