1The heads of the fathers’ households of the family of the children of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of the sons of Joseph, came near, and spoke before Moses, and before the princes, the heads of the fathers’ households of the children of Israel. 2They said, “Yahweh commanded my lord to give the land for inheritance by lot to the children of Israel. My lord was commanded by Yahweh to give the inheritance of Zelophehad our brother to his daughters. 3If they are married to any of the sons of the other tribes of the children of Israel, then will their inheritance be taken away from the inheritance of our fathers, and will be added to the inheritance of the tribe to which they shall belong. So will it be taken away from the lot of our inheritance. 4When the jubilee of the children of Israel shall be, then will their inheritance be added to the inheritance of the tribe to which they shall belong. So their inheritance will be taken away from the inheritance of the tribe of our fathers.” 5Moses commanded the children of Israel according to Yahweh’s word, saying, “The tribe of the sons of Joseph speaks right. 6This is the thing which Yahweh does command concerning the daughters of Zelophehad, saying, ‘Let them be married to whom they think best; only they shall marry into the family of the tribe of their father. 7So shall no inheritance of the children of Israel move from tribe to tribe; for the children of Israel shall all keep the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers. 8Every daughter who possesses an inheritance in any tribe of the children of Israel shall be wife to one of the family of the tribe of her father, that the children of Israel may each possess the inheritance of his fathers. 9So shall no inheritance move from one tribe to another tribe; for the tribes of the children of Israel shall each keep his own inheritance.’” 10The daughters of Zelophehad did as Yahweh commanded Moses: 11for Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Noah, the daughters of Zelophehad, were married to their father’s brothers’ sons. 12They were married into the families of the sons of Manasseh the son of Joseph. Their inheritance remained in the tribe of the family of their father. 13These are the commandments and the ordinances which Yahweh commanded by Moses to the children of Israel in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho.

“But if the daughters of the tribe of Manasseh marry any one of the other tribes of the people of Israel, then their inheritance will be taken from the inheritance of our fathers and added to the inheritance of the tribe into which they marry. So it will be taken away from the lot of our inheritance.”
Numbers 36:3
Summary
In Numbers chapter 36, the leaders of the clan of Manasseh approach Moses with a concern regarding the inheritance of the daughters of Zelophehad. They express their fear that if these daughters marry men from other tribes, their inherited land will become part of the territory of the tribe into which they marry, thus diminishing the tribal inheritance of the tribe of Manasseh. Moses communicates this concern to God, and God provides a directive to ensure that the daughters are to marry within their own tribe. This decree upholds the tribal inheritances and maintains the cohesion of the Israelite tribes as they settle in the Promised Land. The chapter emphasizes the importance of familial and tribal identity within Israel, showing how God’s laws are designed to preserve the integrity of His promises to His people. Key themes in this chapter include the importance of inheritance and identity, the role of women in the biblical narrative, and God's provision for justice and order among His people. Narratively, it highlights how individual decisions can have broader implications for the community and emphasizes obedience to God's will as a means of ensuring harmony within Israel. Theological significance is found in God's active involvement in the lives of His people, reminding them that their heritage and identity are divinely ordained and must be respected. Ultimately, Numbers 36 reinforces the importance of understanding and honoring God's plans for human relationships and inheritance, ensuring that the values of justice, community, and faithfulness are upheld, even in personal matters of family and marriage.
