How to use: read Proverbs 1 aloud together, then take the questions in order. One page is enough for an evening.

Overview

Proverbs 1 serves as an introduction to the entire book, emphasizing the importance of wisdom and instruction. The chapter begins with a prologue that explains its purpose: to attain wisdom, discipline, and understanding of prudent behavior. It is directed at the youth, encouraging them to gain insight and listen to their parents' guidance. The second part of the chapter shifts to a warning against following the path of sinners. The author advises steering clear of those who are quick to rush into violent or dishonest gain, as such paths lead to ruin. Finally, the chapter personifies Wisdom, crying out in the streets, urging the simple and foolish to listen and turn towards a life of understanding. Ignoring Wisdom's call, however, will lead to calamity and distress.
