Psalm 124: Group Study Handout

How to use: read Psalm 124 aloud together, then take the questions in order. One page is enough for an evening.

Overview

The psalmist calls on Israel to acknowledge Yahweh's presence, stating that without Him, they would have been overwhelmed by enemies (vv. 1-2). If not for Yahweh, men would have risen against them with fierce wrath, aiming to consume them (vv. 3-4). The imagery of danger intensifies as the psalmist describes the peril like rising waters threatening to engulf their souls (vv. 4-5). In verses 6-7, the psalmist blesses Yahweh for not allowing them to become prey. Their escape is likened to a bird fleeing from a hunter's snare, emphasizing the breaking of the trap that once held them. Finally, the psalmist asserts in verse 8 that their help is in Yahweh’s name, the Creator of heaven and earth, affirming a trust grounded in His strength and power.
