Psalm 142: Group Study Handout

How to use: read Psalm 142 aloud together, then take the questions in order. One page is enough for an evening.

Overview

The psalmist cries out for mercy to Yahweh, asking for help in his distress (vv. 1-2). He feels overwhelmed and abandoned, stating that others do not care for him and that he is trapped (vv. 3-4). The psalmist declares Yahweh as his refuge and portion, expressing his desperate need for deliverance from stronger persecutors (vv. 5-6). He asks for his soul to be freed from prison so he can give thanks to Yahweh, trusting that the righteous will surround him as Yahweh acts in goodness (vv. 7).
