Psalm 144: Group Study Handout

How to use: read Psalm 144 aloud together, then take the questions in order. One page is enough for an evening.

Overview

The psalmist praises Yahweh as a source of strength, teaching hands to war and fingers to battle (vv. 1-2). He reflects on human nature, noting that men are like a breath, their days fleeting like a passing shadow (vv. 3-4). The psalmist pleads for divine help, asking Yahweh to part the heavens and come down to rescue him from great waters and deceitful foreigners (vv. 5-7). He describes the enemies' deceitful words and false actions (vv. 8-11). The vision of prosperity follows, where sons are well-nurtured plants and daughters are like carved pillars (vv. 12-13). The psalmist envisions abundant provisions in barns and peaceful streets without outcry (vv. 14). He concludes with the blessedness of the people whose God is Yahweh (v. 15).
