Psalm 71: Group Study Handout

How to use: read Psalm 71 aloud together, then take the questions in order. One page is enough for an evening.

Overview

The psalmist begins by seeking refuge and deliverance in Yahweh, asking for rescue and asserting that Yahweh is his rock and fortress (vv. 1-4). He expresses confidence from his youth, stating that Yahweh has been his hope and reliance since birth (vv. 5-8). The psalmist pleads against his enemies, who conspire against him and claim that God has forsaken him (vv. 9-12). Despite this, he maintains hope and vows to continue praising Yahweh, declaring His righteousness and salvation (vv. 13-16). The psalmist acknowledges that God has taught him from his youth and expresses a desire to declare God’s strength to future generations (vv. 17-20). Finally, he praises God for His faithfulness, promising to sing and shout joyfully for His redemption (vv. 21-24).
