Psalm 97: Group Study Handout

How to use: read Psalm 97 aloud together, then take the questions in order. One page is enough for an evening.

Overview

Yahweh's reign is declared, calling for the earth and islands to rejoice (vv. 1-2). His power is revealed as fire goes before him, burning up adversaries and causing the earth to tremble (vv. 3-5). The heavens testify to his righteousness, and all peoples see his glory (vv. 6-7). Zion and the daughters of Judah rejoice because of Yahweh's judgments, acknowledging that he is high above all the earth and exalted above all gods (vv. 8-9). Those who love Yahweh are called to hate evil, as he preserves the souls of the saints and delivers them from the wicked (vv. 10-12). Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness is for the upright in heart. The righteous are encouraged to be glad in Yahweh and give thanks to his holy Name.
