Summary of the Book of Titus
Written: c. AD 62-64
Crete had a reputation, and Paul quotes it: one of their own prophets called Cretans liars, evil beasts, and idle gluttons. Into that culture Paul had planted churches, and he left Titus, his proven troubleshooter from the Corinthian crisis, to set in order the things that were lacking and appoint elders in every city. The letter, from roughly the same period as 1 Timothy, is a compact manual for making the gospel visible in a society that ran on the opposite values.
Chapter 1 gives the qualifications for elders, blameless men holding to the faithful word, precisely because there are many unruly men, vain talkers and deceivers, whose teaching upsets whole households for money. Chapter 2 assigns sound teaching to every group in the church, older men, older women, young women, young men, and servants, so that the word of God will not be blasphemed and opponents will have nothing bad to say. The reason is grace itself: the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation, training believers to live soberly, righteously, and godly while awaiting the blessed hope. Chapter 3 extends the ethic outward to rulers and neighbors, grounded in the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, for God saved us not by works of righteousness but according to his mercy.
Three times the letter insists that those who believe should be careful to maintain good works. In the Bible's larger story, Titus shows grace as a teacher, not a loophole. Salvation received produces communities whose ordinary decency, industry, and gentleness contradict their surrounding culture and adorn the doctrine of God our Savior.
To direct Titus in appointing qualified elders and teaching Cretan believers how grace produces sound, visibly good lives in a corrupt culture.
