Overview

There was a long war between Saul’s house and David’s house. David grew stronger, while Saul’s house weakened (vv. 1-6). Ishbosheth confronted Abner about going into Saul's concubine, which made Abner angry. He declared his intent to support David and transfer the kingdom (vv. 7-11). Abner sent messages to David, offering to unite Israel under him. David agreed but required him to bring Michal back (vv. 12-21). When Joab returned and learned of Abner's visit, he was suspicious and sent for Abner. Joab then killed Abner in revenge for Asahel's death (vv. 22-27). David claimed innocence and mourned for Abner, condemning Joab's actions (vv. 28-30). David led the people in mourning. He emphasized the loss of a great man and expressed his own weakness as king (vv. 31-39).
