ScriptureDepth's study of Exodus 30
“The incense which you shall make, according to its composition you shall not make for yourselves: it shall be to you holy for Yahweh.”
Exodus 30:37
Yahweh instructs Moses about the incense, which must be holy for Yahweh, preventing unauthorized use and ensuring proper worship.
What Exodus 30 is about
Moses receives instructions for an altar of incense made of acacia wood, measuring one cubit in length and width, and two cubits in height (vv. 1-2). It is to be overlaid with pure gold, with rings for poles to carry it (vv. 3-5). Aaron is to burn incense on it every morning and evening, as it is holy to Yahweh (vv. 7-8). Strange incense, burnt offerings, or meal offerings cannot be offered on it (vv. 9-10).
Yahweh commands that when a census is taken, each man must give a half shekel as a ransom (vv. 11-13). The rich and poor must give the same amount (vv. 14-15). The atonement money will support the Tent of Meeting (vv. 16). Moses also receives rules for a basin of brass for washing before entering the Tent (vv. 17-21). Yahweh gives instructions for making a holy anointing oil (vv. 22-33) and precise ingredients for a holy incense (vv. 34-38).
The chapter leaves readers with the command for the altar of incense and the prohibition against using its components for personal use.

Main themes in Exodus 30
Worship and reverence
The instructions for the altar of incense in vv. 1-10 outline a sacred space designated for worship. This altar, made of acacia wood and overlaid with gold, is placed 'before the veil that is by the ark of the testimony' (v. 6). Aaron is commanded to burn incense on it, establishing it as a 'perpetual incense before Yahweh throughout your generations' (v. 8), thus creating an ongoing act of reverence in Israel's worship.
Community and atonement
In vv. 11-16, the regulation for the atonement tax requires every counted individual to offer a half shekel. This act is mandated to prevent a plague among the people, as each person must give a 'ransom for his soul to Yahweh' (v. 12). The equal requirement for both rich and poor ensures that all contribute to the service of the Tent of Meeting (v. 16), highlighting a communal responsibility in atonement.
Holiness and purity
In vv. 17-21, Aaron and his sons must wash their hands and feet at the brass basin before entering the Tent of Meeting to avoid death. This practice is designated as a 'statute forever' (v. 21), emphasizing the need for ritual purity among the priests. The specific washing rituals indicate the seriousness of approaching sacred duties in the presence of Yahweh.
Divine presence in worship
In vv. 6 and 36, the instructions for the altar of incense and the composition of the incense establish a connection to divine presence. The altar is placed 'before the mercy seat' where Yahweh promises to meet Moses (v. 6), and the incense is described as 'most holy' (v. 36). These elements create a designated space and practices for communion between God and His people, marking the sanctity of worship.
