Obadiah 1: Group Study Handout

How to use: read Obadiah 1 aloud together, then take the questions in order. One page is enough for an evening.

Overview

The vision of Obadiah reveals the judgment against Edom, declaring it small and greatly despised among nations (vv. 1-2). The pride of Edom deceives its people, who believe they are secure in their high dwellings (vv. 3-4). However, Yahweh will shatter their sense of security, as no thieves would take everything, but Edom will lose all (vv. 5-7). Yahweh will destroy the wisdom of Edom and its mighty men, leading to their downfall (vv. 8-10). Edom's betrayal during Israel's calamity is condemned, as they stood by while Jacob suffered (vv. 11-14). The day of Yahweh is approaching for all nations, where actions will return upon one's head (vv. 15-16). In contrast, those in Zion will escape, and Jacob will reclaim their land (vv. 17-21).
