Main themes in 2 Chronicles 15

The importance of seeking God

In this chapter, the message of seeking God is pronounced through Azariah’s prophecy to Asa and all Judah and Benjamin in vv. 2-3. The call states that 'if you seek him, he will be found by you; but if you forsake him, he will forsake you.' This theme is central to Asa's reforms, culminating in the covenant made by the people in v. 12 to seek Yahweh 'with all their heart and with all their soul.' The chapter concludes with the fulfillment of this promise as God grants them peace.

Covenant renewal

The renewal of the covenant occurs prominently in vv. 12-14, where the people commit to 'seek Yahweh, the God of their fathers, with all their heart and with all their soul.' They further vow that anyone who does not seek Yahweh should be put to death, indicating a serious commitment to this covenant. The joyous response of Judah in v. 15, as they swear 'with all their heart,' highlights a communal dedication to this renewed relationship with God.

The role of prophetic guidance

His message, 'Yahweh is with you, while you are with him,' provides direction during a time of distress, as noted in v. 4 when Israel sought God and found Him. Asa's response to the prophecy is pivotal, as it motivates his reforms and the resulting revival among the people of Judah.

Spiritual revival and reform

Spiritual revival is evident in Asa's actions after hearing Azariah's prophecy, particularly in vv. 8-11 where he removes abominations and renews the altar.
