What Jeremiah 51 is about
Yahweh proclaims a destroying wind will come against Babylon (vv. 1-2). Strangers will winnow her and utterly destroy her army (vv. 3-4). Despite Israel's guilt, Yahweh will not forsake them (v. 5). The people are urged to flee Babylon to escape impending judgment (vv. 6-8). Babylon is likened to a golden cup that has made the nations drunk (vv. 7-8). Yahweh's power and judgment are affirmed, emphasizing His sovereignty over creation (vv. 15-24). Babylon will face desolation, with no one to inhabit her lands (vv. 25-32). The fate of Babylon includes being a desolate wasteland, and her inhabitants will suffer (vv. 33-44). A final plea urges the people to escape and warns of judgment (vv. 45-58). Jeremiah instructs Seraiah on how to deliver this message to Babylon (vv. 59-64).
Yahweh promises to bring judgment on Babylon, leaving her desolate and uninhabited forever.

Don’t let your heart faint.Don’t fear for the news that will be heard in the land. For news will come one year, and after that in another year news will come, and violence in the land, ruler against ruler.47Verse 47. Therefore behold, the days come that I will execute judgment on the engraved images of Babylon;and her whole land will be confounded. All her slain will fall in the middle of her.48Verse 48. Then the heavens and the earth, and all that is therein, will sing for joy over Babylon;for the destroyers will come to her from the north,” says Yahweh.49Verse 49. “As Babylon has caused the slain of Israel to fall,so the slain of all the land will fall at Babylon.50Verse 50. You who have escaped the sword, go!Don’t stand still!Remember Yahweh from afar, and let Jerusalem come into your mind.”51Verse 51. “We are confounded, because we have heard reproach.Confusion has covered our faces, for strangers have come into the sanctuaries of Yahweh’s house.”52Verse 52. “Therefore behold, the days come,” says Yahweh,“that I will execute judgment on her engraved images;and through all her land the wounded will groan.53Verse 53. Though Babylon should mount up to the sky,and though she should fortify the height of her strength, yet destroyers will come to her from me,” says Yahweh.54Verse 54. “The sound of a cry comes from Babylon, and of great destruction from the land of the Chaldeans!55Verse 55. For Yahweh lays Babylon waste, and destroys out of her the great voice!Their waves roar like many waters. The noise of their voice is uttered.56Verse 56. Main themes in Jeremiah 51
Judgment against Babylon
Judgment against Babylon is prominent throughout this chapter, particularly in verses 1-3 and 24-26. Yahweh declares that he will raise up a destroying wind against Babylon, commanding, 'Don’t spare her young men! Utterly destroy all her army!' The chapter depicts Babylon's imminent destruction and the fulfillment of divine vengeance, culminating in a desolate state where 'you will be desolate for ever,' as declared in v. 26.
God's sovereignty
God's sovereignty is articulated in verses 15-16, where it states, 'He has made the earth by his power. He has established the world by his wisdom.' These verses emphasize Yahweh's authority over creation and his control over events, including the downfall of Babylon. The text leaves readers with the understanding that God's plans are unstoppable, as seen in v. 12 where he has 'both purposed and done' against Babylon.
Vindication of Israel
Vindication of Israel appears in verses 5-10, where it reassures that 'Israel is not forsaken, nor Judah, by his God.' Despite Babylon's rule, the chapter conveys that Yahweh will bring about justice for his people, urging them to 'flee out of the middle of Babylon' in v. 6. The recognition of Yahweh's righteousness in v. 10 contrasts with Babylon's impending doom, emphasizing Israel's eventual vindication.
Idolatry versus worship of God
Idolatry versus worship of God is addressed in verses 17-19, where it critiques the idolatrous practices in Babylon, stating, 'Every goldsmith is disappointed by his image; for his molten image is falsehood.' The chapter characterizes idols as vanity and delusion, contrasting them with the true God, referred to as 'the former of all things' in v. 19. This sets the stage for the judgment on Babylon, reinforcing the futility of false worship.
