“Therefore behold, I will cause them to know, this once I will cause them to know my hand and my might. Then they will know that my name is Yahweh.”

Jeremiah 16:21

Yahweh speaks to Israel, declaring his intention to reveal his strength and authority, which follows the theme of their acknowledgment of his name in judgment.

What Jeremiah 16 is about

Yahweh commands Jeremiah not to take a wife or have children in this place (vv. 1-2). He pronounces judgment on the sons and daughters born there, stating they will die grievous deaths and their bodies will not be buried (vv. 3-4). Mourning and festivities will cease, as the people will not be lamented or comforted (vv. 5-8). When the people question why this evil has befallen them, Jeremiah is to tell them it is due to their fathers forsaking Yahweh and their own stubbornness (vv. 9-13). Yahweh promises to restore His people from the land of the north and their exile (vv. 14-15). He will send fishermen and hunters to seek them out and recompense their iniquity (vv. 16-18). Nations will come to recognize Yahweh's might and acknowledge the lies they inherited (vv. 19-21).

Yahweh states He will make His hand and might known, affirming that they will recognize His name.

Main themes in Jeremiah 16

judgment

God pronounces severe judgment on the people of Israel for their unfaithfulness, particularly in vv. 4-5. Here, it is stated that the people will die 'grievous deaths' and their bodies will be left unburied, showing the extent of their calamity. This judgment is a direct result of their forsaking of Yahweh and engaging in idolatry, as mentioned in v. 11. The chapter moves from this grim declaration to explaining the reasons behind such judgment.

restoration

The promise of future restoration appears in vv. 14-15, where Yahweh declares that He will bring the children of Israel back from 'the land of the north' and other nations. This restoration serves as a contrast to the preceding judgment and highlights a future hope for Israel. The mention of the land given to their fathers signifies a return to their roots, suggesting that despite their current plight, there is a divine plan for their revival.

idolatry

Idolatry is a central theme in Jeremiah 16, seen in God's accusations against the people in vv. 11-12. The text states that the people have 'walked after other gods' and 'have not kept my law', revealing their infidelity to Yahweh. This theme is further emphasized in v. 20, where the folly of creating 'gods, which yet are no gods' is questioned, underlining the serious consequences of their actions and the divine response to such behavior.

covenant faithfulness

Yahweh reminds Israel of their covenant relationship in verses 10-11. The troubles they face are attributed to their ancestors' forsaking of God, indicating a breach in the covenant. In verse 21, God declares that He will make His power known, which affirms the expectation of faithfulness from His people and the consequences of failing to uphold that covenant.
