ScriptureDepth's study of Joshua 3

It shall be that when the soles of the feet of the priests who bear the ark of Yahweh, the Lord of all the earth, rest in the waters of the Jordan, that the waters of the Jordan will be cut off. The waters that come down from above shall stand in one heap.”

Joshua 3:13

Yahweh speaks to Joshua about the priests bearing the ark of the covenant, setting in motion the miraculous crossing of the Jordan as the waters will stand in 'one heap'.

What Joshua 3 is about

The people of Israel camped at the Jordan River after leaving Shittim (vv. 1-2). Officers directed the people to follow the ark of Yahweh, keeping a distance of about two thousand cubits, as they had not traveled this way before (vv. 3-4). Joshua instructed the people to sanctify themselves, promising that Yahweh would perform wonders among them the next day (vv. 5-6). Yahweh assured Joshua that He would magnify him in the eyes of Israel, similar to how He was with Moses (vv. 7-8). Joshua called the people to hear the words of Yahweh, declaring that He would drive out the Canaanites and others before them (vv. 9-10). He instructed twelve men, one from each tribe, to prepare for the crossing, predicting a miraculous event when the priests' feet touched the water (vv. 11-13). As the priests entered the Jordan, the waters were cut off, allowing all Israel to cross on dry ground (vv. 14-17).

Yahweh promises to be present with His people as they follow the ark into the unknown.

One thing to notice

Joshua’s command to 'Sanctify yourselves' in v. 5 is linked to the expectation of God's actions, as he declares, 'Yahweh will do wonders among you.' This call to preparation precedes the miraculous event of the Jordan's crossing, stressing a connection between personal readiness and divine intervention.

Main themes in Joshua 3

Faith and Obedience

In Joshua 3, the people's faith is tested as they prepare to cross the Jordan River. Joshua instructs the people to 'Sanctify yourselves' (v. 5) and to 'follow' the ark of the covenant as it leads them (vv. 3-4). Their obedience is shown in their readiness to move as the priests bear the ark ahead of them, demonstrating the necessity of trust in God's guidance during this critical moment of transition.

God's Presence

The presence of God is central to the crossing of the Jordan in this chapter. Joshua proclaims that the people will know 'the living God is among you' (v. 10) while the ark leads them. God's assurance to Joshua that He will be with him as He was with Moses (v. 7) affirms that divine presence is crucial for the success of Israel's mission in the Promised Land.

Divine Miracles

Divine miracles are vividly illustrated through the miraculous crossing of the Jordan River. As the priests dip their feet into the water, the text states that 'the waters which came down from above stood, and rose up in one heap' (v. 16). This extraordinary event demonstrates God's power to intervene in the natural order, enabling the Israelites to cross on dry ground as promised.

Transition and New Beginnings

Joshua 3 marks a significant transition for the Israelites as they prepare to enter the Promised Land. The chapter begins with the Israelites camping at the Jordan (v. 1) and culminates in their crossing into a new phase of existence (v. 17). This moment is characterized by the uncertainty of the journey ahead, yet it is framed by God's guidance and the anticipation of new beginnings for the nation.
